Your web design is critical to your SEO program.Professional web designers know that an important aspect of this is Flash.Flash is at the best to be kept minimum. The truth is- Flash could do more harm than good to your site. Sites relying entirely on Flash face even severe threat. Embedded flash is of course less injurious to your site’s health. The main concerns can be if the site is fully built on Flash. There are many reasons for this:

Navigation: The URL doesn’t change on such types of sites. So there remains only one page through which you can enter. Thus you are left with only your home page. This also limits your chances of the more pages getting indexed. Moreover you can miss out seriously on optimization of a number of keywords-as you have only a homepage for entering the site.

In any kind of SEO it is known that content is of prime import. The algorithms Search engines ranking the pages keep on altering. Content is one criterion which is 9 out 10 times given top consideration in this matter. So if there’s more of Flash and only scattered HTML getting your site indexed might only get a harder. With Flash the probabilities of browser incompatibility increase dangerously. Reading the Content in the Flash is still a hard job for major SEs despite claims on things being otherwise.

Flash inherently makes it difficult to deliver information on sources such as your mobile phone or PDA. In the Mobile market especially, HTML seems to be clear winner for a simple reason it loads faster than Flash.Web designing has always been about making the site more interactive. Flash is actually for this purpose. It looks best when it limited to like a movie/audio screen on your site. Too much flash is a major turn-off for many visitors. And worse still, web designers often tend to splurge over it while they should be using it skillfully.

See it this way –HTML is the cake while Flash is the icing on the cake! Too much of it will spoil your cake, will it not? So you see you have got not only legitimate reasons for cutting the Flash, you also know how it may prove most helpful for improving your site’s overall ranks. Web designing in SE optimization is of such critical significance that it better handled with due care and dexterity. It is not saying that thing will not change in the future- though it can safely be said that Flash in SEO, in the present situations, noticeably affects your site adversely.

There are many different types of web design, from those built using website templates and ‘build your own’ site building applications to complex content managed and e-commerce web designs such as those used by big brand names like Amazon, eBay and Tesco.

Some companies, even some big name companies, have unprofessional looking and badly designed websites. Some have amazing looking websites but because of their high graphical content and minimal text content can take an age to load, are not user friendly and do not provide what the visitor wants.

Good Website Design

Though many aspects of website design differ from site to site, many things remain the same throughout the majority of websites on the internet. Most notably is the navigation or menu.

The way in which a website’s menu works and looks is very important, as ultimately, visitors to a website are looking for certain criteria that will make them either stay and interact or leave. This ability for a website to keep visitors interested is sometimes referred to as stickiness. Visitors want an attractive visually exciting experience, but perhaps more importantly, they want ‘ease of use’.

Website usability is a key factor for websites that want their visitors to stick around, make an enquiry and ultimately complete a transaction and order a product or service.

Easy to Use Web Design

Internet users tend to prefer easy to use websites, because they do not want to have to learn how to use a website every time they find a new one. They should be able to use a website after only a few seconds of looking around a homepage, any more and they will leave and browse elsewhere.

The need for fast user interaction is vital and therefore having a fast loading website is also important for a website to succeed. Even with faster internet connections such as broadband, internet users don’t want to wait around.

Just imagine, if you go to a shop on the high street and are totally ignored by shop assistants at the counter for 5 minutes, even after you have made it clear you want help. There is a correlation here to how an internet user may feel, when they arrive at a website that has been poorly designed, is difficult to use, unfriendly and slow to load.

Making sure that a website has been well thought out and designed with the user in mind, displays a company’s unique selling points within easily recognisable eye catching calls for action and has a clear, easy to use menu is key to its success.

Flash Web Design

With recent web design advancements, such as the introduction of Flash animation and high definition video content, impressive websites have been produced to take advantage of much higher levels of visual effects and interaction. However with this ‘high end’ web design, comes a price, more often than not, web designs which rely heavily upon Flash content are often ridiculously slow to load. They often have a progress bar, which slowly goes across the web browser to signify when the website will finish loading.

This is much like the progress bars that you may be familiar with if you use video editing or 3D rendering software, or if you use games consoles where they are displayed whilst you wait for games to load.

Internet users on the whole do not want to wait 3 – 5 minutes for a web page to load even if it does feature high resolution images, animation or video. They want fast informative content rich websites. If they wanted to watch an animation or video they would watch TV.

Good Flash Web Design

This is not to say that Flash animation is all bad news and shouldn’t be used in web design. If used subtly and in small amounts it can make a website more visually appealing without slowing the load time down too much. Suitable uses for Flash animation in web design are things such as; Flash banner advertisements, Flash video and interactive Flash forms for online questionnaires or business presentations.

Using Flash for a whole website design however, is not such a good idea. It slows the user’s experience down because they have to wait for elements of it to load. Also, sites totally developed in Flash tend to use unfamiliar menu structures and features. This can confuse visitors who just want to quickly interact with the website and not be amazed by the way the menu animates.

Just because you can do these things in Flash, it doesn’t mean they have any real working value in the real world. They may look pretty, but if they are not functional and only irritate the visitor then they have no real value.

Flash Web Design & SEO

Another argument against using Flash to create a whole website is that it dramatically reduces the effectiveness of your websites’ Search Engine Optimisation. Flash web designs are made up of one main file within a web page which search engines find difficult to index. This is because the text within them is usually graphical text and therefore is not usually accessible by search engines.

Some recent developments allow some text to be displayed for search engines in Flash websites, but this is nowhere near as effective as text content within traditional HTML based websites.

Don’t Write Off Flash in Web Design

Although Flash does have its limitations it also has its good points if used correctly. For instance; Flash animation is usually smaller in file size than traditional gif animation and because of the way it is made the animation flows smoother than gif animation too.

Having said this, I would recommend only using Flash in small areas within a site to compliment other imagery that makes up the overall design.

Finding a balance between minimal graphical elements, imagery, Flash and good quality informative text is the key to a successful user friendly website. This isn’t to say that web design needs be boring. By working with quality web design companies there’s no reason why you couldn’t have a visually exciting, well designed, easy to use and successful website.

Visually Stimulating Web Design

When visitors first arrive at a website, they want to be impressed and engaged with what the website has to offer. This will be determined by the ways in which the web designer has laid out the website’s content text, images and features.

Arranging elements such as imagery, text, graphics, flash and video in such a way as to keep the visitor interested in the website is the key to good web design. If a website has poor design and doesn’t grab the attention of the visitor in the first few seconds, then it may well be dismissed as just another average website. This ultimately means the visitor will go elsewhere to spend their time and, more importantly, money.

Good Web Design Layout

A lot of time and money is spent making sure that the right elements of websites are positioned in the right places. Companies spend large amounts of money conducting research into how internet users use their websites.

This type of research shows where their visitors’ eyes concentrate the most, which elements of the website they click on first and generally how they interact and use their websites.

Most internet users will look primarily from the top left either across the page, or down the left hand side of the web page through an internet browser via a computer, mobile phone or TV set.

I would hazard a guess, that they are looking for the company’s name or logo, their main selling points or slogans and then what the website has to offer in terms of what is featured in the menu. After which their eyes are probably drawn across the page content and over to the right hand side. Successful web design usually takes this into consideration and will ultimately affect the way a website looks.

There are of course rather famous exceptions to this rule for instance one rather well known search engine has a web design which is quite different. The main focus and core functionality in their web design is located right in the centre of the page. This however, isn’t any ordinary website with tens or even hundreds of pages of products and services to display, its main focus is its recognisable logo and of course its search box. It does however feature a small minimal menu across the top of the web design, which flows from left to right. So even they have taken onboard some of the research undertaken into internet users’ habits.

If you go looking at websites after reading this article, I can guarantee that most of the web designs you’ll see, will have a left hand menu and a defined header bar with a company logo and slogan across it.

Krishna Mitra and Lucky Balaraman host this week’s show.
Help answer the question about mobile web design
Can I cancel a credit card with a 0% APR within the intro period?
Firstly, I am completely opposed to credit. It scares me because of how much people go in debt to it. I want the card for a single purchase and then I want to scrap it. I'm looking into buying a Macbook for school and for mobile web design & photography work; stuff that generates me some money now. I've been looking at cards that offer no annual fees and a 0% APR because I don't want to pay more than I have to. But I only plan to use this card for the Macbook and then I want to get rid of it and just pay the monthly fees. All of it will be paid off within one year which is how long the 0% APR lasts that I have been looking at. Can someone give me any advice? I just want to make payments on this computer and that be the end of it. I'm also upgrading my camera soon, so I'm selling stuff to afford that and I just want to use credit to get the laptop.

This is a topic I have been giving some thought lately.

What is the best website design?

Is it a website that wins awards? Is it a website that can be viewed in every browser and mobile device?

As a website designer, I see websites from a different perspective than a typical website owner. But, for a change, I am going to try and put myself in a typical business owner’s position and as such, when I think of “best website design” what immediately comes to my mind are not all the things mentioned above. What does come to mind is a “successful” website.

Why do businesses create websites in the first place?
The majority of the time they create websites to promote or sell their products and/or services, so their goal is to have their website generate sales or leads, in other words their goal is to have websites that produce an income.

Ranking high on the engines
In order for a website to be profitable, there are several factors that must be considered as absolutes. One, of course is the web design itself. Two, is the accessibility of the site pages. In other words, how easily does the site come up on your computer? How easy is it to find what you are looking for on the website?
Three, is the search engine friendly towards the site design and construction. In other words, can the search engines read it? You’d be surprised how many websites are NOT search engine friendly (in fact only 15% of websites are!)
At Netklik we offer better website ROI by addressing all three of these factors. Our definition of “best website design” encompasses these three extremely important issues.

How do we do it?
When a client comes to us, we listen to his requirements and we make recommendations about which pages he should include on his website. But to create the website at that point would be a terrible mistake. Why? Because there is one major service that we provide PRIOR to website design, that is Keyword Research.

The importance of the Keyword Research
After we make recommendations about the structure and navigation of the site, we offer our clients our Keyword Research service. You see, the very basic nature of search engines is that Internet users go to a search engine and “type” in a keyword phrase. The search engine then looks for website pages that have that keyword phrase in them. So, if a website is to be “found” for a keyword phrase, that phrase has to be on the website!! But, which keyword phrase should you use? Our keyword research service can tell you. This research tells us the keyword phrases that people are typing into the search engines. Of course, we look for phrases that are related to the website! With the results of this research we are able to find phrases that give us great opportunities which otherwise would have been unknown.

At NetKlik, our policy is to use ONE keyword phrase per website page. That ensures that the search engines SEE that website page as a source for that keyword phrase. So when Internet users are searching for those keyword phrases, the client’s website shows up on the top of the list.

This process is known as search engine optimization and the results provide a client with much greater business opportunities, which translates into better return on investment.

I have various skills & experience including design and programming. I am frustrated at how much money I generate for the company yet how little I get paid, so am seriously considering starting my own firm that would provide web development and mobile development services. I've got some clients already due to side projects, but am nervous about generating enough work to stay afloat especially having a wife & 2 young kids at home. Really I'm not dependent on my current employer for anything besides salary, especially given the fact that we already pay for our own (expensive) health insurance. I've always wanted to start my own company and am feeling that now is the time. We're already poor, so how much worse could it be.

My question is, what would be some creative, effective, yet cheap ways to generate some business for myself?

Throughout the course of history of Web Development all information and content has went from static, to sites producing content “on demand” or dynamic if you will.

The object of this model was to deliver the information to Personal Computers, or MAC’s but it was never really designed for use on Mobile devices.

In comes the PDA. Those same sites don’t display properly on a PDA or cell phone.

Due to the fact that is uses a mini-browser and generally supports non-HTML markup.

In addition to not truly supporting HTML these devices have smaller CPUs, smaller I/O devices, and a nominal battery life at best.

All things considered for developers it is still imperative to build apps for these devices.

While building these apps they need to be simple, buy yet efficient due to the parameters that you are working with on a Mobile device.

To begin building a Mobile App using ASP.Net, you will need to use the System.Web.Mobile Namespace which is included in the .NET Framework.

The Namespace comes loaded with ASP.NET Mobile Controls, as well as authentication for your Mobile apps.

ASP.NET Mobile Namespace(s) Namespace Description System.Web.Mobile Includes core mobile functionality System.Web.UI.MobileControls.Adapters Includes Core adapter classes System.Web.UI.MobileControls Includes ASP.NET Mobile Controls

With the combination of these namespace you now have the building blocks, or as my friend Joe calls them “Legos” to be begin building a Mobile Application.

Once a request is made from the server to retrieve a page the System.Web.Mobile Namespace takes a look at the HTTP headers to determine the device type and the browser being used.

At this point the server produces the proper control from the System.Web.UI.MobileControls Namespace, and it also selects the coinciding adapter from System.Web.UI.MobileControls.Adapters based on the device type.

Compendium:

In this article I have given you the foundation to being using Mobile Controls.

Happy Coding

Josh is a First Year Student on the BA/BSc (hons) Degree in Mobile, Web and Game Design, at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
Help answer the question about mobile web design
Ok now with the Palm Pre for Sprint, what is the best phone G1 (T-Mobile), Storm (Verizon) or iPhone (AT&T)?
CES 2009 brought us a new player in the smartphone upper-echelon. Let's drill down and see how the Palm Pre compares with the iPhone and Android's G1.

1. Multitouch touchscreen/gesture control: All three are capacitive, only the Pre and iPhone have multitouch. The Pre's glowy little "gesture area" has dropped the touchable real estate all the way down tto the bottom of the phone, which is great for being able to navigate with one hand and not interfere with the screen at all. The wavey dock you bring up from the bottom looks awesome, but can you use it out of the box without a second thought or page through the manual? That's my question. Advantage: iPhone/Pre tossup.

2. Multitasking: One of the beefiest of our beefs with the iPhone SDK is its insistence on Apps running one at a time. The G1's notifications drawer was definitely a step in the right direction, but the Pre's interface is the first smartphone OS that was built with multitasking as a core design element. Resembling the Xbox's old Blades, or a less-jarring OS X Expose even, the Pre's "Cards" interface always places you in the context of every app running for fast switching, and notifications from other apps don't pull you away completely from the task at hand. Multitasking is hugely important on a phone, and it's a good sign that Palm recognizes. Advantage: Pre

3. Hardware: Adrian says:

While the hardware is definitely high quality, I'm not entirely blown away by the design. It looks really nice, and original, but it's a little too cutesy in shape and kind of reminds me of an oversized pebble. A slightly larger screen could have definitely been put to good use, and I really don't like the black space on the sides of the screen.

A phone with a built-in QWERTY still hasn't touched the iPhone in terms of sleekness and pure sex. And it might still be a while. Advantage: iPhone

4. Development platform: The Pre's "Web OS" sure sounds nice—all developers need to know is JavaScript, HTML and CSS? Sounds good in theory, but building a mobile app will never be as easy as cranking out a new theme for your Tumblr. Palm's stressing ease of development, though, so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against Apple's solid, familiar-to-devs OS X-based SDK and Android's fully open source approach. Advantage: Pre? If it's straight-up JavaScript, that's a lot of programmers ready to go. Note: we had iPhone here before, but we've switched with a qualification. Developer community still goes to iPhone for volume.

5. Web Integration: The Pre subtly integrates the internet into the phone at every opportunity, and it's awesome. Contacts get pulled in from Facebook, Gmail, IM and and scanned for dupes; the messaging app shows your last several emails, IMs and SMS with that contact in a single window. Really, really smart stuff. Advantage: Pre

6. App Store/developer community: A smartphone is only as good as the software it runs. On the Pre, Palm is still keeping application delivery details like pricing behind the curtain, but they did say the app delivery will be entirely handled by the phone (without a desktop app), which is a shame. They're saying that they're not going to duplicate Apple's Hobbesian app approval black box mistake, which Android has also hasn't fallen for, but there will be an approval process based on "security and stability." But as we know with Android, a dev community needs enough devices in the hands of consumers to reach critical mass, which the Pre will have to match. Advantage: iPhone, even with the black box, but Android and Pre's more open stances are reassuring.

7. Wireless charger: We've seen wireless charger tech for years at CES, but it's taken this long for a major consumer gadget to come bundled with its own wireless charger in the box. Whoops, it's not in the box, sold separately for unknown $$. But still: Bravo. Advantage: Pre

8. The Network: Dan Hesse, Sprint's CEO, gave our coast-to-coast 3G test a shout out in his press conference. Of course he did: Sprint won (in download speeds). Sprint was the only major carrier without a powerful, hype-catching smartphone choice, and now they have one. The Pre is a data-centric phone with a network we've proven to be strong in a large swatch of the country—that's a good combo. But would you switch to Sprint for the Pre? Ugh. Advantage: Not cut and dry for everyone, but we stand by our numbers: Sprint is the best 3G network in our tests.

9. Physical keyboard: It's preference, but one held by a large swathe of the gadget buying public: physical QWERTY keypads are still the mainstream input of choice. Touch is getting better all the time, but a lot of people still want physical keyboards. But better yet is the ability to choose; unfortunately, the Pre doesn't have a soft onscreen keyboard, and its slide-out is the same meh QWERTY from the Treo Pro. Advantage: It's preference, but on me, the iPhone's soft keyboard can't be beat.

10. Camera: The P
re has an LED Flash for its 3MP camera, something both the iPhone and G1 lack. Flash cellphone photos are ugly, but for a lot of people, they're good enough. So credit for throwing it in. Advantage: Pre

11. Battery: Apple's still an outlier with their non-removable battery; like the G1's, the Pre's comes out for a spare swap too. We've heard Apple's reasons for this a million times, we know the drill, but removable batteries will never stop being handy. Advantage: Pre

12. Copy & Paste: Yep, Pre's got it. iPhone still doesn't. Advantage: Pre/G1

13. Browser: All three use a browser based on WebKit, which has become the standard for the mobile web. We couldn't put it through our Mobile Browser Battlemodo ringer obviously, but what we saw looked great, and it's the only other mobile browser besides the iPhone that supports multitouch zooming. Advantage: iPhone/Pre

So there you have it. We're excited. Are you?

CSS Web Design Basics

So, what is CSS? CSS is the acronym for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is a simple mechanism for adding style and describing the presentation e.g. fonts, colors, spacing and other aspects of web presentation. Cascading Style Sheets were developed as a means for creating a consistent approach to providing style information for web documents. Most Web authoring tools provide some sort of support for CSS style sheets, such as the ever popular Dreamweaver™.

Using CSS design allows your pages to download more quickly, makes your website much easier to manage, and has numerous web usability, accessibility and search engine optimisation benefits, in fact in order to validate your XHTML pages with the w3c, you are required to use css.

Style sheets have been in use for years. They are the technical specifications for layout, whether print or online. Print designers use style sheets to insure that their designs are printed exactly to specifications. A style sheet for a Web page serves the same purpose, but with the added functionality of also telling the viewing engine how to render the document being viewed.

However, the cascading bit for web page design is the special part. A Web style sheet is intended to cascade through a series of style sheets, like a waterfall. Every Web page is affected by at least one style sheet, even if the Web designer doesn’t apply any styles. This style sheet is the user agent style sheet – the default styles that the Web browser will use to display a page if no other instructions are provided. But if the web designer provides other instructions, i.e. specifies a specific link color, the browser needs to know which instructions have priority, the cascade defines the style sheets set by the designers to redefine the color and supersede the web browser’s defaults.

Using CSS you will find your web pages will be smaller; increasing your site download time, something that will appeal to your website visitors and, to boot your mark-up will be cleaner, appealing to the all important search engines. Once a site has been created using CSS maintenance of the site becomes much easier, making life simple for the web designer or persons in charge of web maintenance. How? The presentation of an entire web site or web document, for example the color of links, can be changed by altering just one file, greatly reducing the time and money spent on upkeep.

Using CSS your content will be accessible to all browsing devices, incorporating everything from Lynx based systems to mobile phones and PDA’s

When you’re first learning to build a Web site, you often don’t think much about style sheets, as you’re too busy learning to tell a

from a
. But once you’ve mastered the basics, CSS is a great place to go to make your pages more user friendly and controllable.

The Benefits

By editing a single CSS file, you can make site wide design changes.

CSS lets you output to multiple formats quickly.

CSS lets you use logical names for page elements. You can, for example, give a DIV the name “header”, or a H1 the class “headline”.

External CSS files are cached by browsers, improving load time.
