Your web design is critical to your SEO program.Professional web designers know that an important aspect of this is Flash.Flash is at the best to be kept minimum. The truth is- Flash could do more harm than good to your site. Sites relying entirely on Flash face even severe threat. Embedded flash is of course less injurious to your site’s health. The main concerns can be if the site is fully built on Flash. There are many reasons for this:

Navigation: The URL doesn’t change on such types of sites. So there remains only one page through which you can enter. Thus you are left with only your home page. This also limits your chances of the more pages getting indexed. Moreover you can miss out seriously on optimization of a number of keywords-as you have only a homepage for entering the site.

In any kind of SEO it is known that content is of prime import. The algorithms Search engines ranking the pages keep on altering. Content is one criterion which is 9 out 10 times given top consideration in this matter. So if there’s more of Flash and only scattered HTML getting your site indexed might only get a harder. With Flash the probabilities of browser incompatibility increase dangerously. Reading the Content in the Flash is still a hard job for major SEs despite claims on things being otherwise.

Flash inherently makes it difficult to deliver information on sources such as your mobile phone or PDA. In the Mobile market especially, HTML seems to be clear winner for a simple reason it loads faster than Flash.Web designing has always been about making the site more interactive. Flash is actually for this purpose. It looks best when it limited to like a movie/audio screen on your site. Too much flash is a major turn-off for many visitors. And worse still, web designers often tend to splurge over it while they should be using it skillfully.

See it this way –HTML is the cake while Flash is the icing on the cake! Too much of it will spoil your cake, will it not? So you see you have got not only legitimate reasons for cutting the Flash, you also know how it may prove most helpful for improving your site’s overall ranks. Web designing in SE optimization is of such critical significance that it better handled with due care and dexterity. It is not saying that thing will not change in the future- though it can safely be said that Flash in SEO, in the present situations, noticeably affects your site adversely.

Every day worldwide millions of people log onto the Internet for business, entertainment and information. Anyone who has a website will cover one of these three aspects, which brings me to the point of web design. If you want your website to be found and used by the general public then you will have to have a site that is designed to appeal to your users.

There are many ways that you can entice someone to do business with you such as offering them a cheaper service than your competitors but on the Internet if you want someone to do business with you then your website needs to be user friendly and designed in a way that will make people stay on your site long enough to buy the products or services that are on offer to them.

The design of your website is more important than many people realise and often people design their sites with the wrong people in mind. A lot of people when they are first setting up their website will design their site in a way that appeals to them and in a way that they feel best reflects the business; this is the first mistake to make. When you are designing your website you need to do so with your target market in mind. You need to identify who you are aiming your website at, for example if you are aiming your site at a younger audience then your website should be quite funky and can include more flash as this will draw your audience in. If however the products or services that your business offers can apply to anyone of any age, such as mobile phones, you have to be careful when it comes to the design of your site as you need to design it in a way that will apply to all members of the public. The best way to go about doing this is by keeping your site simple and using neutral colours.

Your website needs to promote your business, you need to make people get involved in your business merely by the design that you have used. This may sound like a difficult thing to do but when you know how you can go about this with no problem at all.

When you are designing your website you should use limited colour and coordinate your website. As well as this you also need to remember that you need good unique content that is original. Your web content is the backbone of your website and it should be search engine friendly. You need to make sure that your site is easily readable and easily accessible for your visitors.

The design of your website can be the difference between your business being a success online and your business being a failure. You need to make sure that any phone numbers are placed in the top right hand corner under the sites logo and that your contact page should be clearly labelled. All of your pages should navigate to each other and the back to the main home page.

If you are struggling to get your site designed then you should enlist the help of a professional web design company to get the design done for you.

Meurig is a First Year Student on the BA/BSc (hons) Degree in Mobile, Web and Game Design, at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
Help answer the question about mobile web design
Should I get a laptop or a smart phone?
I am in high school, and am trying to decide between 3 options: a smart phone, a netbook, and a laptop. I am in all accelerated classes, but my messy notes are practically useless, and so my grade struggles, although I have A's and B's. I have a nice gaming desktop, but I don't like Vista, and it's overkill for much else. I would be allowed to use the Netbook or Notebook in class, but not the Phone. I also want to start an online business doing programming or web design. And I want to be mobile, so battery life is a must. My parents would pay half either way, and they would be about equal in cost. The Smartphone would be the Touch Pro, on Sprint, the Laptop, would be a last gen, or bottom line Macbook, and the netbook would be the Eee PC 901, or the 6 Cell Windows MSI Wind. Please email me with any questions. So what do you think?

There are many different types of web design, from those built using website templates and ‘build your own’ site building applications to complex content managed and e-commerce web designs such as those used by big brand names like Amazon, eBay and Tesco.

Some companies, even some big name companies, have unprofessional looking and badly designed websites. Some have amazing looking websites but because of their high graphical content and minimal text content can take an age to load, are not user friendly and do not provide what the visitor wants.

Good Website Design

Though many aspects of website design differ from site to site, many things remain the same throughout the majority of websites on the internet. Most notably is the navigation or menu.

The way in which a website’s menu works and looks is very important, as ultimately, visitors to a website are looking for certain criteria that will make them either stay and interact or leave. This ability for a website to keep visitors interested is sometimes referred to as stickiness. Visitors want an attractive visually exciting experience, but perhaps more importantly, they want ‘ease of use’.

Website usability is a key factor for websites that want their visitors to stick around, make an enquiry and ultimately complete a transaction and order a product or service.

Easy to Use Web Design

Internet users tend to prefer easy to use websites, because they do not want to have to learn how to use a website every time they find a new one. They should be able to use a website after only a few seconds of looking around a homepage, any more and they will leave and browse elsewhere.

The need for fast user interaction is vital and therefore having a fast loading website is also important for a website to succeed. Even with faster internet connections such as broadband, internet users don’t want to wait around.

Just imagine, if you go to a shop on the high street and are totally ignored by shop assistants at the counter for 5 minutes, even after you have made it clear you want help. There is a correlation here to how an internet user may feel, when they arrive at a website that has been poorly designed, is difficult to use, unfriendly and slow to load.

Making sure that a website has been well thought out and designed with the user in mind, displays a company’s unique selling points within easily recognisable eye catching calls for action and has a clear, easy to use menu is key to its success.

Flash Web Design

With recent web design advancements, such as the introduction of Flash animation and high definition video content, impressive websites have been produced to take advantage of much higher levels of visual effects and interaction. However with this ‘high end’ web design, comes a price, more often than not, web designs which rely heavily upon Flash content are often ridiculously slow to load. They often have a progress bar, which slowly goes across the web browser to signify when the website will finish loading.

This is much like the progress bars that you may be familiar with if you use video editing or 3D rendering software, or if you use games consoles where they are displayed whilst you wait for games to load.

Internet users on the whole do not want to wait 3 – 5 minutes for a web page to load even if it does feature high resolution images, animation or video. They want fast informative content rich websites. If they wanted to watch an animation or video they would watch TV.

Good Flash Web Design

This is not to say that Flash animation is all bad news and shouldn’t be used in web design. If used subtly and in small amounts it can make a website more visually appealing without slowing the load time down too much. Suitable uses for Flash animation in web design are things such as; Flash banner advertisements, Flash video and interactive Flash forms for online questionnaires or business presentations.

Using Flash for a whole website design however, is not such a good idea. It slows the user’s experience down because they have to wait for elements of it to load. Also, sites totally developed in Flash tend to use unfamiliar menu structures and features. This can confuse visitors who just want to quickly interact with the website and not be amazed by the way the menu animates.

Just because you can do these things in Flash, it doesn’t mean they have any real working value in the real world. They may look pretty, but if they are not functional and only irritate the visitor then they have no real value.

Flash Web Design & SEO

Another argument against using Flash to create a whole website is that it dramatically reduces the effectiveness of your websites’ Search Engine Optimisation. Flash web designs are made up of one main file within a web page which search engines find difficult to index. This is because the text within them is usually graphical text and therefore is not usually accessible by search engines.

Some recent developments allow some text to be displayed for search engines in Flash websites, but this is nowhere near as effective as text content within traditional HTML based websites.

Don’t Write Off Flash in Web Design

Although Flash does have its limitations it also has its good points if used correctly. For instance; Flash animation is usually smaller in file size than traditional gif animation and because of the way it is made the animation flows smoother than gif animation too.

Having said this, I would recommend only using Flash in small areas within a site to compliment other imagery that makes up the overall design.

Finding a balance between minimal graphical elements, imagery, Flash and good quality informative text is the key to a successful user friendly website. This isn’t to say that web design needs be boring. By working with quality web design companies there’s no reason why you couldn’t have a visually exciting, well designed, easy to use and successful website.

Visually Stimulating Web Design

When visitors first arrive at a website, they want to be impressed and engaged with what the website has to offer. This will be determined by the ways in which the web designer has laid out the website’s content text, images and features.

Arranging elements such as imagery, text, graphics, flash and video in such a way as to keep the visitor interested in the website is the key to good web design. If a website has poor design and doesn’t grab the attention of the visitor in the first few seconds, then it may well be dismissed as just another average website. This ultimately means the visitor will go elsewhere to spend their time and, more importantly, money.

Good Web Design Layout

A lot of time and money is spent making sure that the right elements of websites are positioned in the right places. Companies spend large amounts of money conducting research into how internet users use their websites.

This type of research shows where their visitors’ eyes concentrate the most, which elements of the website they click on first and generally how they interact and use their websites.

Most internet users will look primarily from the top left either across the page, or down the left hand side of the web page through an internet browser via a computer, mobile phone or TV set.

I would hazard a guess, that they are looking for the company’s name or logo, their main selling points or slogans and then what the website has to offer in terms of what is featured in the menu. After which their eyes are probably drawn across the page content and over to the right hand side. Successful web design usually takes this into consideration and will ultimately affect the way a website looks.

There are of course rather famous exceptions to this rule for instance one rather well known search engine has a web design which is quite different. The main focus and core functionality in their web design is located right in the centre of the page. This however, isn’t any ordinary website with tens or even hundreds of pages of products and services to display, its main focus is its recognisable logo and of course its search box. It does however feature a small minimal menu across the top of the web design, which flows from left to right. So even they have taken onboard some of the research undertaken into internet users’ habits.

If you go looking at websites after reading this article, I can guarantee that most of the web designs you’ll see, will have a left hand menu and a defined header bar with a company logo and slogan across it.

Krishna Mitra and Lucky Balaraman host this week’s show.
Help answer the question about mobile web design
Can I cancel a credit card with a 0% APR within the intro period?
Firstly, I am completely opposed to credit. It scares me because of how much people go in debt to it. I want the card for a single purchase and then I want to scrap it. I'm looking into buying a Macbook for school and for mobile web design & photography work; stuff that generates me some money now. I've been looking at cards that offer no annual fees and a 0% APR because I don't want to pay more than I have to. But I only plan to use this card for the Macbook and then I want to get rid of it and just pay the monthly fees. All of it will be paid off within one year which is how long the 0% APR lasts that I have been looking at. Can someone give me any advice? I just want to make payments on this computer and that be the end of it.
Think as a customer. Suppose you want to buy a latest mobile phone. You have the option of website A and website B. The former website gives you a full insight of all major mobile phone companies, plans, tariffs and schemes. The option A also provide good reasons of buying online. You have better payment options and the website makes sure that your card details would be secured and the shopping would be safe. Now, website B also have better mobile phone companies, nice plans and schemes. But it is not ensuring about security although you are getting the most lucrative offer. Which website will you chose?

Any sensible customer would prefer to choose website A. Web based application has a major role in making anyone choose this option. These applications make a website easy to use as a prospect perceives it secure to be used. It is necessary that a website is made up of useful boxes, navigation buttons, links, contents and tools. Otherwise it can become difficult for a common user to browse through it. You can choose a web designer company for making your website like website A.

These web designers take a good care of everything regarding a website. Whether it is site layout or position of tools, they ensure that the web design is standardized so that the visitor enjoy going through it. Web based application makes the page user- friendly. For example if there is a need of scrolling then it is created standardized. Since font size plays an important role so its size is kept appropriate and familiar one. Designers know that varied fonts confuse and distract and more than two fonts for tow pages may not work well. Printer friendly fonts are chosen and spacing is taken care of during web design.

Web based application also ensure that web design provides for browser compatibility. It can be said that all loose screws of a website is tightened to solve the purposes of a customer in nice way. And it is necessary if you want your website to be as perfect as website A. This is the only way of making more customers.

Thanks

The Scottish tourism industry will be "dead in the water" without embracing new technologies.
The warning came from Alan Rankin, chief executive of the Aviemore and Cairngorms Destination Management Organisation, ahead of Tourism Innovation Day, on February 28 in Glasgow.
Rankin, former chief executive of the Scottish Tourism Forum, spoke out following results of a Scottish tourism survey carried out by Highland Business Research for Tourism Innovation Day, which showed that 59% of companies felt that they could do better in terms of embracing technology.
He said: "The tourism industry will be dead in the water unless it adopts the opportunities presented by new technologies."
Many of the companies surveyed, which included accommodation businesses and tourist and visitor attractions in Scotland, cited similar themes when asked about their biggest technology challenges.
These included securing funding to develop and increase the use of technology; not having broadband available in their area; being able to update their website regularly; the cost of promoting a small business on the web and staying on top of changing technology and trends such as the growth in use of rich media and Web2.0.
Rankin questioned whether Scotland will be able to meet the challenge as quickly as emerging markets.
"In the global market, having your website configured for the mobile phone, will become a necessity," he said.
"For a lot of people in the Asian economies, the phone is a more important internet mechanism than the computer. This will become increasingly true of the developed markets.
"Yet in some of our key rural tourism areas in Scotland, we don't have the mobile technology infrastructure in place – a major obstacle to overcome. Some areas do not even have broadband available."
In the Scottish tourism survey, 94% of respondents have not offered mobile travel applications for customers and 96% did not have a version of their website for the mobile phone.
Respondents were aware of the importance of social networking sites as a promotional channel, but only 17% of respondents had used such sites for promoting their businesses.
Rankin warned that using social networking comes with its own sets of problems.
"Such sites can pose challenges in terms of controlling the messages and should a company receive online criticism, it is there for the whole world to see. Companies therefore need to either get their service right in the first place," he said.
Tourism Innovation Day, which is organised by the Tourism Innovation Group with Scottish Enterprise, has been designed to inspire and equip Scottish tourism organisations to apply technology, and develop innovative new products and services.
Sue Crossman, project director for TiG, said, "The percentage of global hotel bookings made online for the first quarter of 2007 was almost double that of the same period last year.
"Internet bookings accounted for 41.2% of total CRS bookings in major hotels chains throughout the world, up from 22% in 2006.
"One third of all bookings during the first quarter of 2007 came through hotels' own websites.
"With the ever increasing use of the web coupled with mobile phone advances, new technology will let the customer source better deals, and will raise their expectations in terms of receiving more customised tourist information."
She challenged businesses of all sizes to raise their game in exploiting new technology, calling for "effective digital portals" to be set up for all of Scotland's main tourist destinations.
The portals could use technology similar to popular social networking sites such as Bebo and Facebook, and allow visitors to post comments, pictures or videos about their personal experience of any location or service.
Crossman claimed such sites would boost online bookings and help visitors find out more about the quality and variety of tourism experiences on offer.
Digital portals would encourage smaller business, such as individual bed and breakfasts, that are still not confident about what the new technology can do for them, to work together to promote themselves and their location.
She said: "Some companies are missing out on the available technology and that is not helping our global competitiveness.
"There are now cost-effective ways for any accommodation business to offer online bookings; this is a must going forward. New technology, including the kind that allows you to post user-generated content on the web, is very exciting and should be helping destinations get their messages out there effectively."
Tourism Innovation Day includes keynote speaker, Ben Vinod, chief innovator at Sabre Holdings, the company behind Lastminute.com.
by Phil Davies

One of the most happening gadgets of today’s times is a mobile phone. The whole world can be fit in such a palm instrument with internet enabled phones. As the technology in the mobile phones is improving day by day, it has become necessary to add on to the new facilities as well. A large number of people are using internet on their mobile phones, but it has got certain limitations. The mobile phones have much smaller screen and therefore visibility is a big problem. The clarity of the web content also decreases in the mobile phone. Certain pictures and graphics also lose visibility on mobile. This results in the low rank of your website. An effective way of solving this problem is by getting a web design for mobile devices. This is the latest technique which enables you to have your website in a mobile compatible version.

A mobile website is mobile-specific site that has different web design and development. This site is specially meant for viewing on small screen. The making of the mobile website design is same as the normal website but there are certain programming features that need to be taken care of. However, first of all you need to have a different URL of your mobile site. You can choose URL such as yourwebsitename.com/mobile or you can also have m.yoursitename.com or mobile.yoursite.com. It is completely your choice. Once this is done it is essential to redirect script for mobile phones. This will redirect the viewers of your site automatically to the mobile version of the site if they are accessing your site from mobile phones. Another thing to be careful about is the layout style of your mobile site version. It should be simple and lucid. You can have fonts like Arial, Verdana and Georgia which have better visibility.

The typical mobile version of the Wikipedia can be seen here. You can make use of Dreamweaver or any of your choice editor for the developing the code. However, to get rid of all this hard work, you can simply use the facility of Mobile website design companies. There are various companies with qualified staff of experts who can make the mobile version of your website easily. Contact mobile website companies for various mobile website design packages.

Tables design is the web design which uses HTML tables to design a page layout and control processes.

Instead of tables then emerged a new style sheet language CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

Use: These languages or to e specific this language was then used to arrange page elements and text on the web page.

Introduction to CSS: World Wide Web Consortium introduced CSS language which was used to improve accessibility to web and to make the HTML code more semantic than presentational.

Advent of CSS: when CSS web design was introduced many web developers found it much easier to use. They considered the formatting through CSS very simple, infact they considered the <FONT> tag to be obsolete in reference to table’s web design. Earlier CSS had very limited and difficult to use layout capabilities but now the times have changed and now CSS ahs improved a lot with many common page layouts especially its 3-column design.

Since 2006 CSS has improved significantly but still there are certain websites which use tables for layout and CSS for text formatting only.

Tables vs. CSS:

- Accessibility: the layouts in tables are actually better over CSS because if you want to open your PDF files in your mobile phones then it becomes necessary that they are accessible and tables allow them to be accessible on mobiles also.

- Implementation: clever implementation of tableless design is able to produce web pages with less of HTML tags which will allow the user to download pages easily from the web.

- When it comes to tableless designs then if any changes are to be made, it is then easier in your CSS design to change them rather than changing in table’s web design. This is infact a difficult task.

- It happens that in some browsers CSS does not get full support and hence the downloading can be incomplete. This happens especially in the case of NETSCAPE 4 software, where CSS downloading is a problem.

Is your website accessible to people with disabilities? It seems like today, website owners are more concerned with mobile web design than they are with making their sites available to the millions of people around the world with disabilities. It makes sense from a business perspective to make your website as accessible as possible to everyone, but it is also becoming a legal matter and much for many businesses and organizations.

The World Wide Web is classified as a form of Information and Communications Technology, or ICT. Laws and policies regarding ICT accessibility that are already in existence are being considered in terms of the Internet. In addition, more and more legislation addressing ICT accessibility is being enacted around the world.

Although the Internet is for the most part unregulated, laws can apply to the Web as ICT. Many countries currently have government laws, policies, regulations and recommendations in place regarding Web accessibility. An abbreviated list of these countries includes: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Spain the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Americans with Disabilities Act and Internet Accessibility

In the United States, rulings regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) resulted in the determination that State as well as local governments and the business sector must provide “effective communication” during Internet communications.

A significant point of the ADA policy rulings is that communications in graphical format are almost impossible for people with visual disabilities to understand. Screenreaders cannot make sense of graphic images: text format is absolutely essential, including text for navigational tools, graphs, tables and charts.

You can find out more about the ADA and rulings regarding the Internet at the US Department of Justice (USDOJ) website.

Implementing Universal Design

Whether laws are governing your website today or not, it is in your best interest to make your site accessible to all Internet users – especially if it is a business website. How can you accomplish this? By implementing the elements of Universal Design on all of your web pages. Your entire website will then be available to the widest range of Internet users possible, regardless of the type of technology or equipment they use, disabilities, age, or level of education.

The following are some of the specific ways you can apply Universal Design principles to your website:

1. Provide text browser support

2. Present documents in text format rather than in frames or PDF

3. Avoid requiring visitors to download software to view information

4. Add “Alt” tags to your graphics so screenreaders can “read” images

5. Hyperlink all photos with descriptive text

6. Hyperlink video and audio clips with captioning

7. Provide email or voice/TTY phone number alternatives for on-line forms

8. Avoid relying on color to convey information

You can obtain more complete information about website accessibility guidelines from resources such as W3 online.

Depending on your skills, you may or may not need assistance redesigning or developing your next website for full accessibility. Whether you make changes to your website design yourself or rely on professional assistance, remember to evaluate the results.

There are many free evaluation tools available online that can help you test web pages on your site for accessibility. For a comprehensive evaluation that would ensure compliance with web accessibility laws, you will need to rely on the expertise of a knowledgeable professional as well as evaluation tools.

Additional Benefits of Web Accessibility

Whether you need to bring your website to full web accessibility standards to comply with legal requirements, or you’re primarily interested in providing access to those with disabilities, you’ll discover some surprising additional benefits.

A website with a flexible design is more accessible to people browsing the Web with limited technology, such as dial-up Internet connections or outdated computers. Your fully accessible website will also be available to those with temporary disabilities, such as people recovering from surgery or accidents. With the right equipment, even people with limited or no literacy skills will be able to browse your website.

Regardless of what type of website you have, focusing on web accessibility will benefit your visitors as well as your business in a variety of ways.

Kia is a First Year Student on the BA/BSc (hons) Degree in Mobile, Web and Game Design, at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
Help answer the question about mobile web design
Crawling the web for news articles?
I'm wanting to develop a program/script to crawl the web for any news articles relating to publicly traded stocks over the last 5 or 10 years. I would probably limit my search to a set of specific websites since that would obviously decrease my search field. I would want to somehow store the articles found on a hard drive as an html or text file.

My question is, how would I go about designing something that could do this. I know it's possible, but I don't have the knowledge yet to do it. I'm very proficient in Java (except apps relating to networking/mobile devices/internet, unfortunately). I'm willing to learn the syntax for other programming/scripting languages if I need to.

Can anyone give me some pointers or point me in the right direction? Thanks a lot.

When deciding on a mobile phone, it is important to consider the right form factor not only for aesthetic purposes, but for ease of use as well. All of the phones on the market can be broken down into several rough categories: clamshell, slide, swivel, and candy bar. There are variations on these categories, including the dual slide action and others.

Clamshell

The clamshell is one of the most recognizable of all the mobile phone form factors available on the market today, and consists of two sections that fold onto each other at a central common hinge. One example of this form factor is the Motorola RAZR, a phone marketed for its very slim design. This phone is offered on the GSM and CDMA networks, and is filled with all of the latest features, including microSD support, Bluetooth, MP3 ringtones, music playback, MP4 video playback, and a VGA camera.

Slide

The slide phone is one that has two separate segments that slide past each other, in order to conceal a keypad or mini keyboard. A dual slide action is one that slides in one direction to reveal an input surface, and another direction to reveal a separate input surface. An example of a slide phone is the Helio Ocean, that has one slide that exposes a number pad, and the other displays a full keyboard. The Helio Ocean has advanced capabilities, including GPS navigation, the Opera Mini browser, multimedia player with video and audio support, document viewing, image viewing, instant messaging support, email, YouTube, and so much more.

Swivel

The swivel phone is one unique interpretation of mobile device design in which one segment swivels under another. This is present in the Samsung U470 Juke phone, which has a very narrow profile with keys that swivel under the screen to provide the form of a small mp3 player. The Juke has a built-in 2GB storage space for music, as the key feature is the music playback capability. The Juke will play the WMA, WMA Pro, AAC, AAC+, and MP3 formats, and has a built in VGA camera with a night shot mode.

Bar

The final form factor is known as the bar, candy bar, or slab design. These devices are in a flat cuboid shape, with the buttons, keypad, and screen exposed. Two companies known for phones of this form are Sony Ericsson and Nokia. A very famous example of a bar phone is the Apple iPhone. The iPhone is a slab phone with no keypad, but instead a multi-touch screen that will accept and accurately interpret the input from more than one finger at once. The Apple iPhone runs on a stripped down, but complete version of Apple’s OS X operating system. This allows the phone to have one, if not the best platform for mobile application development, as well as the full Safari web browser. This phone also supports full email with a document viewer for attachments, a Wi-Fi iTunes store, YouTube support, 3G networking, maps with A-GPS, and much, much more.

Any one else have this happen?

The cell phone supports most of the standard networks such as GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, HSDPA 850/1900/2100. Its size is 110.5 by 52.5 by 17 mm. The weight is only 145 grams and the screen is TFT 65K with 800 by 480 pixels, about 3 inch. The cell phone does supports GPRS, WAP, and EDGE. It does not have infrared feature but the cell phone got Bluetooth 2.0. The cell phone has an internal memory of 400 MB.

By golly, could this really be it? Excuse the theatrics but it has been a very long time since the Sony Xperia X1’s unveiling in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress 2008. Considering that this is Sony Ericsson’s first attempt at a Windows Mobile smartphone, should I cut them some slack? I consider the phone as a better phone than any other cell phones out there offered in some prepaid cell phone plans.

What caught my attention was its gorgeous body. Despite being thicker than most normal cell hones, the X1 has a somewhat average bulk when compared to other Windows Mobile cell phones. At 145 grams it felt pretty solid in my hand and not that brick-like and the closest cell phone in build and size to it would be the HTC Touch Pro.

The Sony Xperia has a similar optical mouse found on the Omnia but I found it to be very erratic and moody. It worked well when used to scroll web pages but was pretty mediocre in general as I found that it tends to overshoot its target.

What drew me to the Sony Xperia X1 however was its screen. The screen looked great with its WVGA resolution and the navigation pad on the front is rather tactile. However the chrome-like QWERTY keyboard feels flat despite having some slight accents to it. For starters the top row of the keyboard was simply too close to the edge and the curved design which we initially thought would help, it did not. However I did love its backlit keys, I mean after all who does not like backlit keyboards?

The Sony Xperia X1 panels or rather X panel is Sony Ericsson’s touch interface application for the X1, much like the Touch Flo interface is for the HTC cell phones. My review unit had six panels which were supposed to replace the boring WinMo Home screen. I personally found most of it uninteresting except the fish pond and Google panels. The fish panel is just a simple clock with three fishes that will swim to wherever your finger is on the screen and the Google panel is basically a shortcut application for web searches. The rest of the panels however were more multimedia related.

Maybe it is a little too early to really give a full opinion on Sony Ericsson’s X1 panel implementation as the SDK has only been released. After all at print time only a Facebook and Windows Live panel had been released and downloadable from the manufacturer’s website.

On paper the 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7200 processor and 256MB of RAM looked like it would have been able to handle WInMo’s notorious resource issues. Well unfortunately for our unit it did not. Lags were aplenty and even a simple task like pressing ok and exit took a while which was not exactly a good sign. I ended up rebooting the cell phone quite often in order to get it to work more efficiently. Of course after rebooting, it would behave for awhile then the whole process repeats itself.

There is a silver lining of course. At times when the cell phone did not slow down, I did find that overall process of using the cell phone pretty ok and you do get the full Windows Mobile experience that you would expect from a cell phone like Xperia X1. I don’t know if the lag issues are due to the unit we have being a prototype or maybe even a firmware issue.

Windows Mobile 6.1 comes with push email, MS Office, Google Maps, Windows Live, Adobe Reader LE and so on. Email and contacts sync is pretty efficient here considering the cell phones native compatibility with Microsoft Windows. One of the more interesting applications is the Opera Mobile 9.5 which is way better equipped for browsing. As expected, Opera is not the default browser and any links you access from emails and other programs will only launch Pocket Internet Explorer.

The only downside for a Windows Mobile 6.1 device is that there is not much third party application to choose from. In fact some third party applications only work with a specific device. To ease your suffering somewhat, there is an online store of sorts preinstalled by Handango. Known as Handango InHand, it allows you to purchase software from them and its shortcut is embedded into the default home page in Opera and Pocket Internet Explorer.

I have neve found GPS on a cell phone particularly awe-inspiring but the Sony Xperia X1 cell phone surprised me with a fast loading Google Maps. In terms of locking on to satellite signals, X1 is just like any other cell phone. My test in the outdoor gave faster locks when compared to indoors and in areas with high building, results were a bit more varied.

Located at the back of the cell phone is the 3.2 mega pixel camera and I found it odd that Sony Ericsson did not decide to give the X1 cell phone a five mega pixel CCD instead. At least it would have put it in a better position against the onslaughts from Nokia and Samsung.

That aside, the Sony Ericsson X1 cell phone suffers from a similar fate like the rest of the Windows Mobile camera cell phones. The camera interface is sluggish in every way. Microsoft really has to do something about Windows Mobile’s resource management as no matter how good a CCD you put into a cell phone, the limitations in picture taking speed will eventually take its toll.

As for image quality, I did not really have high hopes but surprisingly, the results blew me away. Images captured looked great on the cell phone and even on the computer. The sharpness and the richness of colors are great even for a camera cell phone. This more or less allowed me to overlook some of the minor issues like white balance.

The Sony Ericsson X1 gets its juice from a Li-Polymer 1500 mAh battery and with general usage it’s good for nearly two days. General usage covers a couple of hours of voice calls, occasional web browsing over WiFi, taking pictures of bored commuters, playing a few hours of simple Java games, checking email via 3G/WiFi and listening to music once in a while. Considering the battery life of most Windows Mobile cell phones, I found that the Sony Ericsson’s battery life was considerably better than the rest.
